In 1917, alcohol (ethanol) was derived from corn and other foodstuffs as an alternative to fossil fuels. The need of replacing fossil fuels with alcohol occurred due to the measurable depletion of fossil fuels that led to the alternate usage of alcohol to fossil fuels.

Another reason for alternate usage of alcohol to fossil fuels is that alcohol (ethanol) is obtained from cheap resources, such as contemporary equipment and cheap sugar cane, and the residual cane-waste. Cellulosic alcohol (ethanol) can be obtained from a diverse selection of feedstock, and involves the use of the whole crop.
